Prof. Hartstein is board-certified and has special expertise in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is uniquely qualified to perform cosmetic eyelid surgery.
Prof. Hartstein’s approach to cosmetic eyelid surgery focuses on rejuvenating the face, of which the eyelids are the central part. Successful eyelid surgery involves restoring and redistributing volume in the face to achieve a youthful and natural look. Simply removing tissue can sometimes lead to a more aged appearance. Prof. Hartstein takes a customized approach to each patient in order to achieve the best results.
Prof. Hartstein has published several scientific articles and books on cosmetic eyelid surgery, and teaches international courses to other physicians on blepharoplasty surgery.
Upper blepharoplasty
Prof. Hartstein strives to restore the natural proportion of the upper eyelid fold to the eyelashes and to prevent hollowing of the upper lid which is a sign of aging. The incision is hidden in the patient’s own natural lid crease. Sometimes, the eyelid muscle may need to be tightened as well in order to open the eye more.
Lower blepharoplasty
Lower eyelid surgery by Prof. Hartstein may involve redistributing bulging fat pads to areas which are hollow, tightening and folding the eyelid muscle to create volume and enhance lid contour, and injection of the patient’s own harvested fat (liposcupture) around the eyes create a smooth transition to the cheek.
Liposculpture
Prof. Hartstein has vast experience with fat injections around the eyelids and it is a regular component of his eyelid surgery. Many of the aging changes in the face are a result of volume loss. Simply cutting out tissue and lifting tissue may not always be indicated and in some cases, may produce a less-natural look. Prof. Hartstein harvests the patient’s own fat, and then injects the fat around the eyelids and face to restore the lost volume of the face. Sites of fat injection include:
- Brow
- Upper lids
- Lower lids
- Cheeks
Brow lift
Prof. Hartstein has experience in many different techniques for lifting the brow.
Although the brow does not always need to be lifted, it is important to always consider the brow when considering eyelid surgery. Prof. Hartstein performs endoscopic brow lifting, where small incisions are made in the hairline and a camera is used to provide visualization. Prof. Hartstein also performs minimal-incision brow lifting where a small incision is made directly over the brow to provide the lift. Healing of this incision is almost invisible. Some patients appear to have brow descent but it is really a result of volume loss under the brow. Prof. Hartstein can restore a youthful look of the brow using fat or filler injections and without the need for a brow lift.
